Re: Rescue a 'locked out' PC?

Partimage is only of use, if you've previously made an image of your system. Perhaps you might try Systemrescue CD or its forum. On the other hand, just try a fresh install of Ubuntu (IE, start the install over).

Re: No way to restore MBR

You may want to address your concern on the System Rescue CD forum, it is probably more active. Although Partimage is still widely distributed, it hasn't been updated for a long time. I hope you are not using it as your primary OS backup method. There is a newer program, fsarchiver, by the same deve...

Re: install faile on ppc64

It is far easier if you can install the package from your repo. Installing from source might be difficult now because partimage has not been actively developed for a while. The architecture you're using may have changed significantly since the last partimage version.

Re: ext4

As I understand, the main developer, Francois Dupoux, began work on fsarchiver to fill a similar function but at the file level instead of the block level. Personally, I switched over to fsarchiver to backup my operating systems though I was a partimage user for years before. It has worked fine for ...

Re: Write (restore) only changed blocks

No, partimage will save all blocks in the target partition and restore them all in a restore. There are several techniques to get the most out of ssds depending upon your operating system. I have an ssd each for my linux OSes and Win7 with the operating system on the ssd and my data files on a spinn...

Re: Windows Version Supported

See http://www.partimage.org/Supported-Filesystems for supported filesystems. Partimage will work for WinXP and some have gotten it to work for Win7, but those are considered "experimental." There are other things made specifically for windows that might be more appropriate. If you are loo...

Re: No way to restore MBR

You may not be able to get your MBR back from your saved partimage images, but there are ways to fix or recreate it; just google. If the only system on your EEE is WinXP, it should not be too difficult. The main idea is to get to a dos command prompt and run "fixmbr" Then you should be abl...

Re: partimage restore image

I have few images that i need to restore on different partitions on one HDD. The partition table is gpt and i was wondering if partimage supports gpt partitions. Thanks Not sure, you could test it. Partimage images blocks on a hdd, it does not copy data, so it might work OK. The partition table cou...

Re: PartImage crashes/closes during restore dialogue

This is the largest partition ive tried to image with PI, and the ( !) ...........are the only two new variables i have noticed...........everything else seemed standard with the save process and the restore dialogue. So you have successfully used partimage before. There is quite a bit of info in t...

Re: Backup of Ubuntu 12.04 root Server

If I understand, you are trying to save an image of your server on the server hdd itself. Is that right? It's possible, but not a good idea for if the drive itself fails, all is lost. It's better to save your image to a different drive. Also note that partimage wants the "source" (partitio...

New Authentication method

Due to ongoing spam issues, a new authentication method has been implemented. Previously, users could self-register by solving a scrambled "captcha." Spam-bots have become advanced enough to solve most of these. Now registration will be done by a Q&A process which should be easy for hu...

Re: backing up more than one computer os on a terabyte usb d

Of course you can partition a usb hdd with more than one partition. However, partimage may not be the best backup solution for you. It is mainly a tool for making an exact image of a given partition. Good for things like saving and restoring an operating system. To save data, like sermons etc., you'...

Please check the partimage manual. The link is at the top of this page. Remember partimage is for saving and restoring entire partitions. Use other things to save/restore individual files. Partimage takes a snapshot of the entire partition, but you can't add incrementally to it; only make a new snap...

The terminal is your friend. To check if you really have it

Code: Select all

dpkg -l partimage
If you don't, install it by

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install partimage
Run it, even if it's not in the menu by

Code: Select all

partimage
If it complains, then

Code: Select all

sudo partimage
If you need help, use the documentation on this site.

I assume you've read the partimage user manual? You are stretching the potential of the app imho. If this is your only backup or method to get this data, then I suggest you restore to a single hdd that is bigger by a good margin than the original partition that you saved. Then use rsync or similar t...
