Thanks, I was afraid of that.

It's strange that the drive passed a variety of tests...hdparm, partprobe, testdisk, fsck, etc) without problems. However, it won't work with smartd. smartd complains there are problem sectors and stops monitoring the drive. I guess it really is garbage.

I wasn't clear. I had a hard drive failure that wiped out my entire linux installation. I'm not sure what happened but the result was a completely messed up drive. I deleted and recreated the partitions on the same harddrive. I then tried to restore using my partimage backups using a recovery disk. ...

I had a hard drive crash that completely corrupted my disk. Fortunately I have a backup including the mbr. However, no matter what I've done partimage only shows the volume (eg. sda) and none of the partitions. I've created the partitions both manually using fdisk and from the mbr backup file. I've ...
