Re: partition creation

drewva wrote:i created a partition image, but in the path i saved it as backup_new. I didn't put the .gz on the end. will that affect the restoring process?

Thanks for your help
No you should only know the name. If you put a .gz in the end or not is only for your memory - partimage doesn't care about the name

Re: Agreed.

I Think the main problem (as in most cases) is understanding the concept of partimage... What partimage is: - a tool to create a 1:1 copy of a partition (block-by-block) - a tool to clone a partition to an identical partition (same size, same geometry!) - a tool to reduce downtime for a server...

Just to clearify one thing: partimage is not meant to do a live backup. It is meant as a software able to create an image of existing partitions (therefore the name) to do a System rescue restore or multiple installations from a base image(-set). If you want to do backups, you need a real backup sof...

I've found a fairly easy way to extract individual files from a partimage image file. These are the steps (Linux): 1. create a target image file using dd, e.g. dd if=/dev/zero of=image bs=1024 count=3774771 where 3774771 is the number of 1K blocks. You can use "fdisk -l" on the original system to o...

Re: Suse Linux Enterprise 11

I am running Suse Linux Enterprise 11 with two virtual servers on it. I want to clone it and move it to another box. The virtual Servers or The SLES11? 1. Will PartImage do this?? Yes to the second one. the first one depends on your virtualization service 2. Any suggestions would be helpful since I...

partimage works perfectly well with the ext4 partitions on my Ubuntu box. How is that so? Is it a new partition, or upgraded from ext3? Did you backup and restore? EXT4 is somehow an extended EXT3, but with some new features. So therefore it could (from partimage) be seen as a "strange" EXT3. But i...

Well - it is open source, so you're very welcome to code the ext4 support ;)

Especially the Extent-based design is the hugest change.

The easiest way is to use the supergrub disk http://www.supergrubdisk.org/ and boot the installed System (supergrub reads the grub config from the harddisk), then use grub-install /dev/<<your-disk>> reboot and everything is fine. All other ways (LiveCD and so on) have to deal with the problem, that ...

Thanks for the link. I'll check it out. I should have been a little more clear on what I'm doing. The partimage client is running in a preboot environment (Ubuntu). I'm using it to take/push images of systems that have NTFS file systems. Partimage client can detect that the drives are NTFS, so I'm ...

There are no master or slave configurations on SATA hard drives. This only applies to IDE hard drives where you can connect 2 hard drives to one cable. With SATA you can only attach one hard drive to one cable so there are no master or slave configurations. Thats not the points. He is thinking abou...

Re: error while trying to save partition

Hi, I have followed all the instructions in order to create an image of a partition. I'm using a live CD of Ubuntu 10.04 (because the System Rescue CD just won't boot). So I installed partimage with apt-get, then I run it (with sudo) I select the partition to save, and select the file to save to, t...
