How to create image on external hard disk?

Hi all,
Have a Windows 7 laptop. With partimage on a cd with System Rescue I try to make an image of the W7 system partition to an external hard disk.
I can see the partition I'd like to make an image of (sda3, ntfs) and I can see the external hard disk (sdb1, ntfs).
What exactly do I need to fill in on the line under "Image file to create/use"? I tried various things (as /mnt/backup/image.gz and /dev/sdb1/image.gz) but nothing works. Due to my lack of knowledge of Linux. Who can help me out?

Many thanks beforehand.

Regards,

I have found that I had to create a mount point first, then mount the external disk. That worked.
