WD hard drives EADS vs EARS

Post by pattim » Mon Oct 04, 2010 12:30 pm

Hi Folks: I just stumbled across the differences between EADS and EARS (advanced format) hard drives. In particular, it seems ghosting from one type drive to another is a problem. The bit-by-bit copy mode would misalign data for the newer Advanced Format drives and read/writes on the ghosted drive would take at least twice as long. Are there any plans (or an existing procedure) for Partimage to properly align data when ghosting across drive types? I think even the boot sector is differently-sized on the newer drives.

The lack of a timely reply should tell you something -- Partimage has not been under active development for some time. There are some other projects which claimed to be using or rewriting the code, but these have born no fruit AFAIK. Partimage still works fine for some uses, but newer developments limit it's reliability.
