Problem with booting system (win XP) after restoration

Post by tomtrak » Mon Jan 15, 2007 9:35 pm

I have a problem to restore an NTFS partition from an image (Win XP). All the operations, both creation an image and the restoration went without any problems. However, after rebooting, Win Xp doesn't start. I can see only prompt and nothing is going to do. I tried to fix the problem by running Win Xp instalation program from CD and running FIXBOOT command, but it didn't help. Before creating an image I've defragmented the partition. What should I do to fix the problem.

Sounds if you didn't save/restore your MBR [master boot register], so the fixboot has nothing to fix.
I think the xp disk has another utility to rebuild it, but not sure, as I've made more mistakes in linux and don't have xp on any of my machines.
System rescue disk also has utilities for grub and lilo, which are two boot loaders in use on linux systems.
Also on sysrescue are boot options to "boot first partition", "boot winxp..." etc.
Sorry so vague, but looks like this one languished for a while, so hoping these hints are better than none.
Good luck,

When restoring an image to a HDD, is it a requirement to install the MBR first and then the partition image?

I have the same Problem. In my case 2 Servers 2003 and 2 Workstations Windows XP. The 2003 Server work fine, the XP Maschines crasch by booting.

I found the Problemin my case: the XP Maschines were installed with FAT32, and then converted to NFTS. This Partition i could not restore with partimage. The same Computer with XP and installed directly to NTFS works fine.
