Can I restore partimage to QEMU virtual machine?

Postby MingJiang » Tue Dec 21, 2010 11:45 pm

Hi, I have an old server with Red Hat 9 on it, and I want to move it to a QEMU virtual machine on another server with Fedora 13.

What I plan to do is:
1. Backup the first 512 Bytes of master boot record by
dd if=/dev/sda of=backup-sda.mbr count=1 bs=512

2. Backup partition table by
sfdisk -d /dev/sda > backup-sda.sf

3. Save partitions into image files by using partimage except swap paritition.

4. Create a QEMU virtual machine with the same size or larger than the old Red Hat 9 server.

5. Boot the virtual machine by using SystemRescueCD

6. Restore master boot Record by
dd if=backup-sda.mbr of=/dev/sda

7. Restore partition table by
sfdisk /dev/sda < backup-sda.sf

8. Restore partitions from image files to the QEMU virtual machine.

Have anyone done this before? Or does anyone know if my plan is feasible?

Thank you very much.

I think you will be able to find an easier solution.
But to be honest even this solution may work. Let me know the progress I am curious.
