How to save an antire disk and recreate it exactly as it is

Postby robheus » Tue Aug 09, 2011 7:51 pm

I use a Medion laptop which come with pre-installed windows and the partitions seem to be configured in a special way.

So I want to make an image of the entire disk instead of by partition, and be able to recreate the disk exactly as it is.

What are the exact commands to do that. The saved image may be compressed of course, even if that makes saving and restoring some slower.

windows 7. it uses special formats for the disk partitions I suppose, so that a regular partition save/restore operation probably won't work.

Partimage was considered "experimental" for WindowsXP, but people did use it successfully. However, it has not been actively developed for some time -- before Win7 so you are probably better off using something else. Of course, you are welcome to experiment with it, but you'd be on your own.

Hi to all,

This comment must be considered as is, but saving/restoring Win7 64 pro or Vista Business 32 with partimage 0.6.9 (systemrescuecd) to/from a partimage-server (Fedora 15 or Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) works for me in my environment (Win7 on first partition and never moved). Like I said before, I cannot certify this will work for you.

Cordialy,

I seem to have the same problem with Windows Vista 32 bit. It's not restoring my partition. Actually it seems to generate an error message every time I try to run it...
