Disk too small

Post by Guest » Mon Sep 20, 2004 10:42 am

Hi Forum

Some time ago, a friend asked me to backup his data while he's replacing
his harddisk for some reason. He brought me the Disk, with a NTFS file
system on it. I didn't think much and made an partimag image out of it,
gzip I think.

Now he came with his new hd, I tried to restore but failed:
1. I can't format NTFS, that is the lighter problem, since I could make
some complicated trasnfers.
2. Partimage is telling me, that the Disk is too small for the image. It
were both 160gb drives, the image is about 80gb big (I guess it were
about 100gb of files).

Unfortunately, the first disk is replaced, gone. Is there a way of
getting back the data out of the image?

Thanks, Moritz

You don't need to format an NTFS partition. You just need to make an NTFS partition, using fdisk.
Partimage is NOT telling you that the disk is too small, it is telling you that the partition is too small ... and if you didn't have one on the new drive ... well, no wonder you could not do a restore.
