Restore image cross network doesn't work

Postby mark5segal » Fri Aug 25, 2006 7:45 pm

Hi,

I was able to save image cross network to a server, but I couldn't restore the image from the server:

LiveCD: SystemRescueCd (0.2.19)

Image (Windows XP Pro, NTFS) is stored on a EXT2 file system on the server.

partimaged (SERVER) log file:

Found out why:

For some reason, the NTFS HD formatted by Windows XP Pro installation CD is different than the one formatted by Windows Server 2003 installation CD. Here is what I did (using VMware to simulate a client):
1. Installed Windows XP Pro (HD formatted to NTFS - non-quick).
2. Created HD image and saved to the server
3. Tried to restore HD image back to client, failed
4. Started Windows Server 2003 installation (just to format HD to NTFS, again non-quick).
5. After first reboot, inserted Windows XP Pro installation CD, and started Windows XP Pro installation again.
6. Chose to using existing formatted NTFS partition created in Step 5, and chose NOT to format.
7. Create HD image and saved to the server
8. Restored HD image back to client without any problem.

How did I find out this? I tried to backup/restore a Windows Server 2003 HD, and it worked. First, it made to me think the problem may have something to do with how Dell format HD (e.g., HD was formatted to FAT32, and then converted to NTFS), then I tried a clean XP Pro installation (see Step 1, 2), but it still didn't work.

Just as to second my foreposter I want to add that I tried to restore the content of a WIN XP Pro NTFS partition to a FAT 32 formatted partition after failing to restore it to a NTFS partition.

It didn't work for me, too.

That's really bad luck for me - is there any chance to avoid using Ghost Enterprise for creating/restoring images from NTFS partitions over a network?

I really would prefer some FOSS but first I have to keep my customers in Windows shops happy before I could show them that there is a world beyond Microsoft/Symantec/Adobe.

Thank you in advance for any recommendations.

Regards,
Sigrid
