Network multicast/broadcast

Post by iceburn » Wed Aug 10, 2005 3:45 pm

Wouldn't it be great if you could download the same image to several clients without loosing bandwith using multicasting? I imagine that this would need a lot of work and testing... but it could be a separated function using a different protocol. Without ssl and logins it shouldn't be tooooooooooo hard to do using UDP...
Well, just rambling....

I'm going to need to pump the same 3 GB image file (turning into 20 GB of files on the target disc) to 4-5 or more systems at at time. Multicasting would be fantastic...

Just use udpcast to send partimage and the image file out to each client.
That is what I did.
First each client creates the required partition, and then a temporary one at the "back" of the HDD. The "Master" PC then use updcast to send all the clients a copy of partimage and the image file, then the clients restore the primary partition, and resize to the full size of the HDD.
This will not work in all instances, but it does work.

You can try clonezilla, it's based on DRBL, udpcast and partimage. Both unicast and multicast mode are available. Check:
