Partimage 0.6.4 save NTFS to USB external disk

Post by powah » Mon Mar 20, 2006 4:55 pm

I use Partimage 0.6.4, CaptiveNtfs 1.1.7 on SystemRescueCd 0.2.17 to save NTFS partition on internal disk to a USB external disk.
What is the proper procedure?

I created two NTFS partitions uba1 & uba2 on the external USB disk.
I tried these but they have problems:

First try:
1. I follow chapter 12 of SystemRescueCd user manual to mount an NTFS partition with full Read-Write support successfully.
...
mount.captive-ntfs /dev/uba1 /mnt/win
gvim /mnt/win/testfile

2. I use partimage to save partition hda3 to /mnt/win/hda3.partimage.gz.000

3. I use partimage to restore /mnt/win/hda3.partimage.gz.000 image to uba2

4. I reboot to windows XP.
The file hda3.partimage.gz.000 disappear on uba1!
Fortunately uba2 has the correct partition restored.

Second try:
1. I follow chapter 12 of user manual to mount an NTFS partition with full Read-Write support successfully.
...
mount.captive-ntfs /dev/uba1 /mnt/win
gvim /mnt/win/testfile

2. I use partimage to save partition hda3 to /dev/uba1/hda3.partimage.gz.000

This error message appear:
"Cannot create temp file
[/dev/uba1/pi7129550f.tmp].
Please check there is space enough and you have access rights.

Captive NTFS

Sounds more like a bug in Captive NTFS, then a bug with partimage.

I used ntfs-3g to mount a usbhdd and transfered an NTFS image (WinXP) to the USBHDD.

I tested the restore process and my image by restoring it to a second identical HDD. So far so good.
